The MID FIELD GENERAL DOUGLAS AZIZ
Douglas Aziz was one of the most outstanding Iraqi soccer players who played from 1964-1975 for the varsity team of Police Machinery Club and from 1975-1979 for the Police Club (1st Div.). His playing skills and athletic qualifications were so sharp that he was selected to play for Iraqi national team in 1967. Douglas was considered one of the best elite players who was able to maintain his athletic position as a midfield player in the Iraqi national teams until 1978. He was characterized by having a great stamina, self-restraint and confidence, and his loyalty to the team and country he played for. He filled his field position dramatically, swiftly, and skillfully that he was called by sport commentators and writers Midfield General at one time and the Maestro at another. He was also well recognized for his magnificent penalty kicks and for his direct and indirect free kicks. During his athletic career he participated in all championships and tournaments in which Iraqi national team took part, from 1967-1978. In 1979 he retired after being the team captain of the Iraqi national soccer team for quite a number of years, and scored a number of fantastic goals. In 1979 after his graduation with excellent degree in Kuwait he was assigned as a coach for the Police Club team. Under his brilliant directions and instructions his team won many championships of Iraqi national and military teams along with the great Yugoslavian coach, Voia Verdovitch and as the assistant coach for Iraqi national team along with great Iraqi coach Ammo Baba.
