GILBERT SAMMY
Residence: Diseased 1990, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Gilbert Sammy

Gilbert Sammy, like his fellow Assyrian players, was an amazing and outstanding soccer player who started playing soccer in his early teens in Habbaniaya, the place of his birth. He played from 1955-1958 for the Assyrian Club team in Baghdad.

He joined the Iraqi Air Force team for which he played two years. From 1960-1973 he played for the Police Combined team.  In 1960 he was selected to play for the Iraqi Armed Forces soccer team and he played his first debut for this team against the Syrian Army team.

He also participated in all the (1st Div.) teams domestic games where his team achieved the championship in number of them.

Gilbert played for Iraqi national team alongside with great Iraqi soccer players such as: Ammo Baba, Youra Eshaya, Jamil Abbas Khoswaba Lawo, and others and participated in quite a number of games which were played against foreign teams. He was a very qualified and skilled player, a rare defense, self-confident, and field controller.

In 1973 he left Iraq to the Lebanon and there he played for Al-Estiqlat Club and was appointed as a coach for this team until 1975. This team was from the (2nd Div.) in Lebanon and due to his continuos efforts and great coaching experience this team became from the (1st Div.) and defeated the best (1st Div.) teams including Raising Club team and the Armenian Homenment team. In 1975 he went to the U.S.A with the members of his family and resided in Chicago where he met an Assyrian soccer team known as the Winged Bull.

Soon Gilbert the Great was designated to head coach this almost unknown soccer team and by his continuous effort, valuable instruction and professional coordination, the Winged Bull went to the second division, first division and finally the major division title of the soccer tournament of Illinois.

Gilbert’s athletic career is full with triumphal events. He was only ten years when he was rolling the ball forward and during that some day he should reach the peak of fame like his late father Sammy. Yes, the dream has become reality and Gilbert became a shinning soccer star which will never disappear from the sky’s of Iraq.

Countries visited: England, Russia, China, N. Korea, Vietnam, Italy, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Burma, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan.

Number of games played against foreign teams: 82
